What Are the Most Common Health Conditions?

According to the CDC,  6 in 10 American adults have at least one chronic disease. Heart disease and cancer are among the most common health conditions affecting Americans. They also claim the most American lives every year. Other common health conditions include lung disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, and kidney disease.

For each of these conditions, a combination of lifestyle habits and genetics play a role in the likelihood of an individual developing the condition. In addition, some products may increase someone’s risk for being diagnosed with a serious health condition. Dangerous drugs, defective medical devices, and some commonly used consumer products have been shown to negatively affect the health of those who use them.

Cancer

Today, one in two men and one in three women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, according to the American Cancer Society. While advancements in treatment have been made to help extend the life of cancer patients, there is still much to be done to find a cure to this aggressive disease. Roughly 20% of Americans still die from cancer.

Genetics, lifestyle, and environmental factors all affect an individual’s chances of developing cancer. In some cases, toxic drugs and consumer products may in crease the likelihood of someone being diagnosed with the disease. Pharmaceutical drugs like Zantac and Nexium have been correlated with an increase risk of cancer.

The likelihood that a patient will survive cancer largely depends on how early it is diagnosed. As such, doctors and other medical professionals play a critical role in detecting cancer as early as possible. In some cases, if a medical provider failed to recognize cancer symptoms and order diagnostic tests in a timely manner, they may be considered negligent and subject to a medical malpractice lawsuit.
